Samburu National Reserve is situated 350km from Nairobi. it is 165 km² in size. It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.

Samburu National Reserve is situated 350km from Nairobi. it is 165 km² in size. It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.

There is a wide variety of animal and bird life seen at Samburu National Reserve. Some of the rare species are found here they include The Gerenuk, Grevys zebra, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx and the reticulated giraffe (referred as the special five). Also, you can find the three big cats, the lion, cheetah and African leopard. Other wild animals seen are elephants and the cape buffalos and many more. The park has recorded over 450 species of birds including, Marabou stock, grey-headed kingfishers, sunbirds and many others.

The river Ewaso Nyiro plays a very Important role since it waters Samburu Reserve. The river also contains a large number of Nile crocodiles.

The parks landscape is very photogenic. Samburu National Reserve is also the home of Kamunyak, a lioness famous for adopting oryx calves.

The visitors can take part in a multiplicity of activities that are available. These include night game drives, guided bush walks, trekking excursions, visiting the local Samburu caves full of historical art, cultural village visits.
